Steven Sinn: Week 11, Meet Bill Kingsinger

This is Bill Kingsinger, Bill is one of the four general foreman
that ideal has on site; Bill is in charge of the steel erection on building AB and C. When I first met Bill, building AB was in the beginning stages of erection. Bill has been my right hand man in my time at the event center. If I ever needed anything or needed help with something he found a way to make time and help out. Bill is one of the more experienced Iron Workers on site and I am grateful to be able to learn and work with him. Now Bill is working on building AB detailing and building C. Bill finds a way to be productive and makes the Iron Worker’s work hard on a daily basis. I’d like to thank Bill and the rest of the Iron Worker’s for making my first internship an awesome experience that I will never forget. Here is a picture of Eric Faust and Bill Kingsinger. Eric is one of raising gang iron workers; he has also been a pleasure to work with and has always helped me out.

Steven Sinn: Week 10 DEC Building C Progress

Week 10 was a very busy and exciting week. This week was a big week with the beginning of steel being set on building C. We also had a pretty big lift for us, we had hoisted a  23,000lb  steel beam that connects building C to the main arena. This had drawn a pretty big crowd since it was considered a critical lift for our crane on site. Building AB is beginning the detailing process with connecting the rest of the stairs. All things beside, on Thursday was the biggest of the week with the top out party for the main arena roof. This is a pretty big milestone not just for Midwest steel but for all of the contractors on site. Plus the shirt and food trucks were pretty cool. But as an intern we are closing in on our final weeks of our internship, it is crazy how fast it has gone by. Here are some of the pictures I had taken through the week.

This is a picture of us setting some steel on building C.

Steven Sinn: Week 9 Nick Luxon, and Riley Norman

This week was an exciting week! I was able to see what a day in the life of a VP is like and another Intern. I first started off at Milford Proving Grounds on Wednesday with Riley There is quite a bit going on  out at Milford all the way from PDPM and Hard Dollar, and some pretty cool bridge renovations. After some work in the office with Riley was cut short due to server issues, Steve Webster, and Riley took me out on a tour of the site. We went to check out the bridge renovation where they are replacing the deck, then the tour continued where we had seen GM testing some cars with spin outs and dead stops of a wet surface. After the tour Riley, Drew Rodriguez, Nicole, and I went to lunch in the cafeteria. The cafeteria is a pretty cool place almost like a college cafeteria. Then to conclude my day I was able to sit in on the weekly PDPM meeting with the Milford group and see the progress of the other projects. Again I would like to thank Steve Webster and Riley Norman for letting me come and visit for a day.

Then the week continues on Thursday with another exciting shadow day with Nick Luxon our VP of Construction Operations. Nick has quite the schedule, with it being more than full on a daily basis. The day starts of with Nick letting me sit in on a couple forecast meetings. It was a great experience being able to sit down with Julie Pilarski, Nick, Mark McCrindle, and Travis and see the progress that Flint has made. Then we attended another forecast meeting but was cut short. Then Nick and I sat down and went over his slides for the presentation that he gave at the staff meeting. I would like to thank Nick for squeezing my shadow into a tight scheduled day.

Steven Sinn: Week 8 Building AB Concrete Pour

This week there has been a lot going on with building AB. Today Barton Malow started the level 2 concrete pour. Building AB is close to being done with iron work, maybe another week or two until we shift from AB to building C. A lot of talk has been going on about the Vector Foil Tech job now that building AB is almost done. The Vector Foil Tech job is called the Via Roof system where Ideal will connect building AB and C to the main arena creating a roof that is like a big glass canopy. But this job is a little ways off we have to install connectors on the stadium to connect the beams. This is unique job its self and to add the steel that we will be erecting is being fabricated in Turkey, which will be shipped on freighters and trucked to the Event Center. Here is a few pictures of the building AB concrete pour.

Steven Sinn: DEC Week 7

Week 7 has been a very busy week. I have been helping everyone catch up on their work, from putting load and time tickets into the log and preparing submittals to send to Barton Malow Hunt White. Also I helped Spencer with some NCR'S, organizing them and putting them in the log. Box is becoming a daily thing updating pre tasks and daily reports. Some more preparation on building AB has started Western Mechanical is finishing up on installing plumbing on the main floor and Edgewood installed electrical on the second floor. Now with everything installed Ideal has started laying down re steel on top of the decking for the concrete pours. On the finishing side Ideal had just finished erecting the stairs on the center core.

Here is some of Ideals Iron workers installing the Re Steel on top of the decking.
Here is some electrical that has been finished by Edgewood.

Steven Sinn: Week 6 DEC

My first week back from my trip has been full of catching up on what I had missed while I was on vacation. A lot of progress has been made in the three weeks three weeks that had gone by so fast. Building AB is in its final stages of erecting steel. Detailing and Decking have also made a lot of progress keeping pace with the building. Building C has been started with pouring grade beams and center cores being formed. A lot of earth work has been done excavating for building C grade beams. I had fun on my trip but I am glad to be back home and back to work. Here are some pictures showing progress on building AB and C.

Steven Sinn: Week 5 Hungary

Back from Romania. I have been mostly visiting family on my last stretch of the trip. It is crazy to see how different the European lifestyle is compared to the way we live everyday. Many of the family I have visited, live off of what they grow in their gardens and the livestock they raise. A trip we to the grocery store we often make once a week, is made once a month or every two months. Also I was able to celebrate my birthday and treat some of my family to a nice dinner. I cant wait to be back in the USA to see my friends and family, and also get back to work at ideal.

Steven Sinn: Week 4 Romania

During week four I was not at work but still on my vacation in Hungary. During the trip I had the opportunity to stay in Romania and visit some of the beautiful mountains and hilly landscape. Romania is a very poor country where there are not many beautiful cities like Budapest, but has many mountains that tourist go to see. Here are some pictures of the mountains in Romania.

Steven Sinn Detroit Event Center / Budapest, Hungary

Week 3 was very adventurous to say the least! First the week started out at DEC  where Ideal encountered an issue with a new innovation to iron work. When finishing up sequence's 1-4 on building AB, it required installing a new diagonal bracing system that gives the stadium a modern look. The bracing being new to Ideal, introduced new problems. The bracing is held together with two pins, the pins have a 1/32 of an inch gap to fit into place. In steel erection there is normally more freedom when connecting the steel pieces. When the piece was lifted into place the holes were off by 7/8 of an inch. The team decided to level and plum the building before attempting the braces again. Through the patience and precision of Ideal's steel team the pins fit into place and saved us a lot of paperwork. Adding on to my week I began my trip to Hungary, For the few days I have been here it feels like I haven't even seen a quarter of beautiful sites the country has to offer. Here are some pictures of the diagonal bracing and some landmarks in Hungary.

Here is a picture of the diagonal bracing that is being used.

Steven Sinn: Week Two Detroit Event Center

Week Two DEC
Week two has been full of progress. The Ideal team has been working hard on excavating and pouring grade beams for building AB. Ideal has also begun erecting steel in the first and second sequence of building AB. The steel goes up very fast, and day to day progress is noticeable. My week has consisted of updating all to the equipment and material logs. These are very useful for when costs have to be forecasted. I have also started learning how to use Bluebeam to modify PDF's when sending in submitals. RFI's have been a big part in what I  have started to learn. Every one from Ideal and Barton Malow have been great to work with. Here are some pictures of progress on building AB and the parking garage.
Here are some grade beams that have been poured for building AB.

Steven Sinn: Detroit Event Center, Week One

Week One: DEC
Week one at Ideal started by finishing up my orientation at the Detroit main office. During my orientation I was glad to meet fellow intern Riley. After our orientation we went out to lunch with Yesenia,Alex, and Linda. After lunch it was off to the Event Center. I was met by Austen Harris at the gate who introduced me to my supervisor Tim Kelly. Austen continued to show me around the project. I was amazed by what I had seen, the large steel structure that is to be the Little Caesars Arena. I am thankful for the opportunity and look forward to meeting the rest of the interns.

Here are a few pictures I had taken of the site. This is from the main level in to the lower bowl where they assemble large portions of the roof and set in place.

Here is a picture if a 90 ton crane that Ideal has on site doing most of the lifts. In this picture Ideal is lifting and placing railing for the stairwell.
This is a picture of where reinforcing rebar is set in place for the foundation of what is to be the main parking garage being built by Ideal.
